25.01.08 – Butterthief V.High.P Jam V – Social Change, Conseps & Patti, Integer 1 & Kolaps
Massive love to the crowd who rocked the 5th Butterthief V.High.P Jam. The largest line up so far saw some of Adelaides finest and most long serving emcees next to the freshest new talent to break from the Butterthief roster. Massive thanks to 2Biz for sharing hosting duties and firing up the crowd as he does so well.
First to grace the stage was crew Metrical Minds (Matchelss Gift, Middleman and Second Sense with One Above on the cuts). They immediately had everyone open with their funky beats and tight lyricism. Their stage show is banging. This is the next thing right here and something really soulful worth looking out for.
After the Metrical Minds set came the Adelaide veterans Integer1 and Kolaps of the Certified Wise crew. They had everyone fixed on their mad flows, classic tracks which included Propaganda by Kolaps, and new material including Integer1 new solo set. This was the first time they have played at a V.High.P jam.
Then the crowd was blessed by DJ Kansel and Conseps and Patti, who brought their Battlehogs/Adroit flavour to the V.High.P jam for the second time now. After rocking the spot at the Crown & Sceptre back in November, they once again delivered. Get ya hands on a copy of the Adroit Effusive Part E wax.
Finally the Funk Movement filled up the stage and DJ Snair took over the DJ booth. Social Change introduced the players “Funkwig on drums, Tim Bennett on Bass, Duncan MacGregor on picolo bass, Lucas Tulloc on guitar, Roy Kempster on sax and Holly B on strings”. The set began with some familiar live band tracks “Doin it, Doubledecker and Shots” until Dialect from the Least Expected jumped up to rock a new collaboration track from a project he is working on with Social Change. Metrical Minds even jumped up for a track they regularly rock with the band at the V.High.P jams “What We Do”.
Then Holly B started rocking a violin solo that had everyone flipping when she ended with the familiar strings line from “Lifted” off the Social Change E.P and the whole band joined her as the chorus began. The crowd witnessed the first track from the E.P to be played live on stage with the complete band. This was history in the making for heads who have been waiting. Big up to Funkwig and DJ Snair for bringing that straight boom bap shit with MPC and turntables at the Kool Keith show, and then pulling together the whole band for the V.High.P jam two days later. Respect that fam.
Social Change then invited all emcees to the stage. It was the biggest cypher over the band at a V.High.P jam since they started back in April 2007. Emcees from Social Change, Matchless Gift, Second Sense, Middleman, One Above, 2Biz, Kolaps, Integer1, Delta, Pohetikut, Kim, Harmoniah (Canada), Mesha, Senca, Mnops, and so many more all rocked on well past the curfew. Mad respect to all heads on stage and in the crowd for keeping real Hip Hop alive and kicking.
The night finished with positive vibes all round as heads kept kicking it after the show even once the doors had closed, and then another cypher jumped off in the small hours. These V.High.P jams are not to be missed. keep ya ears and eyes open for the next date.
Free ya mind and ya ass will follow.
